Travel Info

Here’s a clear overview for entering Australia from July 2025:

Get the correct visa. Fill out the IPC honestly, especially for food, plants, medicines, cash. Use SmartGate if possible. Declare anything you are unsure about ‒ this is safer and faster. Don’t bring prohibited items like fresh fruit, meat, uncontrolled medicines, wildlife souvenirs, or nicotine products without prescription.

1) Visa Requirements:

Tourist Visit (≤3 months):
  • eVisitor (subclass 651): Free, for EU, EFTA, UK, some others
  • Electronic Travel Authority (ETA, subclass 601): A$20, for passport holders from countries like the US, Canada, Hong Kong, etc., valid for 12 months
Immigration & Passport Control:
  • Complete the Incoming Passenger Card (IPC) ‒ ask about food, plants, medicines, cash over A$10,000
  • SmartGate is widely available upon arrival for ePassports (≥ 16 years, and ≥ 7 from June 2025)

2) Customs & Quarantine

Australia enforces strict biosecurity and customs rules: Declare Everything

On the IPC, you must declare:
  • Food, plant materials, animal products
  • Medicines, herbal remedies, vaping/nicotine items
  • Weapons, firearms, ammunition
  • Currency ≥ A$10,000 (or foreign equivalent)
  • Goods over A$900 (adult) or A$450 (under 18)
  • Heritage items, wildlife products (ivory, corals, etc.)
  • Prohibited or Strictly Restricted
  • Agricultural goods: fresh fruit, veggies, meat, seeds, soil, live plants, wooden items with bark ‒ can spread pests/diseases
  • Wildlife products: ivory, coral, tortoise shell, protected woods ‒ often require permit or are banned
  • Illegal drugs, steroids, pornography, weapons, vaping goods ‒ all must be declared and may be seized
  • Tobacco: duty applies; can't bring freely
Duty-Free Allowances
  • General goods: up to A$900 (adult), A$450 (under 18)
  • Alcohol: up to 2.25 L
  • Tobacco: up to 25 cigarettes or 25 g tobacco

3) Inspections & Penalties

  • Bag inspections, detector dogs, x‑rays: standard procedure
  • Untruthful declarations can lead to fines (up to A$5,500), visa cancellation, even prosecution
  • Non-compliance with biosecurity (e.g., hiding food) can also result in visa revocation

4) Medicines & Vaping

  • Prescription medicines: Allowed in original packaging with ≤3-month supply and English prescription note
  • Vaping/nicotine products: Allowed only with medical prescription exemption meeting strict import rules

5) Helpful Travel Tips

  • When in doubt, declare it ‒ better to declare than risk fines or scrutiny
  • Wooden items (toys, souvenirs): must be bark‑free, untreated, declared ‒ may be inspected or fumigated
  • Cash or equivalents (gold, jewelry): If ≥ A$10,000 total, must declare and document to avoid suspicion
  • Pack smart: use the amnesty bins in airport arrivals for uncertain items (e.g., fruit), to proactively avoid penalties
